After the four-hour long meeting today between President Obama and BP’s chairman Carl-Henric Svanberg, the final decision on a $20 billion fund to compensate the victims of the Gulf coast oil rig explosion was reached, as well as an offering from BP to set up an additional $100 million fund for oil rig workers who were laid off.

The constant struggle of who should be in charge of the oil spill in the gulf has been discussed and battled over since the BP oil rig exploded over a month ago. Since then, the oil has leaked into the Louisiana bayou and is creeping its way to the Atlantic Ocean. BP has taken control of the situation, to the dismay of most Americans.

Green living initiatives by president Obama were issued on May 14th in an effort to prevent any more safety problems in off shore oil rigs. He issued a moratorium enforcing the immediate halt of drilling new wells and granting of environmental waivers. However, grants for drilling permits and environmental waivers have continued to be permitted by the federal government, met with skepticism and complaints that the terms of the moratorium are too narrowly defined and have been violated.

On April 20th, 2010 a Deepwater Horizon oil drilling rig exploded and killed 11 workers, spawning what is predicted to be the biggest oil spill in this country’s history. The oil is spilling out at over 5,000 barrels a day due to the three breaks in the well pipes and hit the Louisiana coastline late Thursday night, nine days after the initial spill.
